Joelina Machera honors-course analysis
In October 2021, Joelina Machera emailed Superintendent Quoc Tran a summary of her own research into proposed honors changes at Culver City High School. She reported that the English department planned to stop offering ninth- and tenth-grade honors English and described who she had consulted and who, according to those conversations, had not participated in the decision.

Machera wrote that honors English had been eliminated at CCMS about two years earlier and that she understood CCHS English planned to stop offering honors in ninth and tenth grades starting the following year if possible. She said math, science and AP courses were not scheduled to be eliminated.
She said her informal inquiry included administrators, counselors, teachers, a student, a Board member, parents and members of school and district councils. She attributed the stated rationale to eliminating tracking, continuing the middle-school approach and giving all students access to college-ready curriculum.
Machera reported that, based on the people she contacted, counselors, parent groups, SSC, ELAC, EAC and college-admissions personnel had not participated in the decision. These statements are Machera's reported findings from her inquiry, not independent findings by CCR.
