CCHS internal English pathways, honors and college admissions discussion
An October 2021 internal CCHS email chain records the English Department's plan to replace separate English 9/9H and 10/10H tracks with inclusive College Preparatory English courses, alongside detailed counseling concerns about course rigor, transcripts, weighted GPA, college admissions and parent communication.

English teacher Kaitlin Pappert tells CCHS counselors that the department had spent eight years analyzing data and discussing a shift from separate English 9/9H and 10/10H tracks to unified College Preparatory English 9 and 10. She asks counselors to help explain the college-admissions implications at a planned November 18 parent town hall.
Counselors Thelma Valverde and Steve Gyepes raise uncertainty about how selective colleges may interpret the change. Valverde notes that colleges generally say students are reviewed in the context of the courses their own high school offers, while also acknowledging that admissions practices are not fully transparent. Gyepes emphasizes that transcripts showing greater course rigor can matter even when honors classes do not receive extra GPA points.
The chain also circulates language from another Westside high school explaining that UC and CSU did not award extra weighting for several local honors courses and that colleges commonly use a school profile to understand which advanced courses are actually available. James Smith supports deeper review of the college issue but says it should not automatically block the proposed pathway change.
