CCHS Geometry Honors course differences and optional summer readiness work

At a glance

A May-June 2021 email chain between Assistant Principal Kelli Tarvyd and math teacher Aravind Malla explains how Geometry Honors differed from regular Geometry and why the department wanted summer work to be optional rather than required.

Malla says Geometry Honors covered the same essential standards as regular Geometry but went deeper into concepts and required more difficult problem solving. He gives the Pythagorean theorem as an example: both courses apply it, while the honors course also studies why it is true and expects deeper reasoning.

He recommends that students entering Geometry Honors have strong Algebra 1 skills, at least solid B-level performance or a teacher recommendation, and says the course is intended to prepare students for later honors math, AP Calculus and AP Statistics.

Malla asks that prior summer work be posted only as an optional readiness exercise. He says students should not have to submit it for credit and explains that making it optional could make the freshman-level honors course more accessible to students willing to try a more challenging class.
