CCUSD emails on Freddy Puza campaign volunteer recruitment at CCHS

At a glance

An October 2022 email thread documents a request by Freddy Puza's Culver City Council campaign to recruit CCHS student volunteers, the school's invitation to participate in a Public Service Fair, and Summer McBride's later request that district leadership clarify policy and take responsibility for the guidance staff had received.

The campaign email asks Adrienne Madrid about CCHS students volunteering for canvassing and says students had participated in campaign work in prior years. Madrid replies that the campaign can table at the next day's Public Service Fair, provides check-in and parking instructions, and suggests using a QR code or signup form for students.

Summer McBride later writes to Superintendent Quoc Tran that the campaign had been given permission and specific setup instructions. She characterizes campaign recruiting on campus as contrary to election laws, but the PDF itself does not independently establish a legal violation.

McBride argues that district leadership should have given clearer advance guidance to staff and administrators about permissible election activity and asks that the next family statement be shown to the Board before release. An attached campaign flyer identifies Puza as a 2022 Culver City Council candidate and includes campaign endorsements and policy positions.
